Sketchcrawl 13: Berkeley
Saturday was the 13th SketchCrawl, and we had our first official East Bay Crawl. About 30 people showed up to sketch in and around the U.C. Berkeley campus.
The weather was outstanding, and there were lots of great subjects to draw. We met at 11:00am at the West end of campus near BART, and worked our way around and through various buildings. We had a brief meeting at 2:00, and then about 15 of us met up at the Cafe Strada at 5:00 pm to share coffee, sketches and tips. It was a great group of friendly sketchers. […more below]
The Life Sciences Building has T. Rex and Pterodactyl skeletons, as well as other interesting bones to draw. The Anthropology Museum was also open and provided sketching material, but I wanted to stay outdoors in the beautiful weather. I had forgotten how beautiful the campus can be, and I went to school there and live only 1/2 mile away! I will definitely be back there for more sketching soon.

These are wonderful drawings (no, Creations!) you’ve done. You otta’ see the riduculous scrawls I did with some of these UC Berkeley landmarks. Thank you for sharing them on the web.

30! what a great sketchcrawl turnout! and beautiful drawings of course. Interesting how your groups has many more men than ours….We have 35 members, but usually get from 5-12 at a crawl. Fun, isn’t it?

Love this series. For some reason, the skeleton stands out — i really like the touch of color you added behind it.

I am enjoying your Berkeley illustrations. Nice looseness and nice color. Perfect artwork for Sunset Magazine. They should contract with you.

Thanks, everyone!
I will do a post soon on my sketching method, such as it is. I do get a lot of questions on that and will try to cover the details of interest.

It looks like it was a great day and your sketches are wonderful as always. I was in need of solitude on Saturday after a too busy day on Friday and was very grouchy so I didn’t go. Hopefully next time. I’m happy to see your sketches. I have the campus on my list of places to sketch and there certainly are some lovely spots there.

Martha,
I am in love with your sketches and can look at them over and over. I’d be interested in your methods – pencil and then pen or do you work directly in pen? Do you add the watercolor washes at the same time or add it later? Do you take any photos for a permanent record? I’m so glad that you are part of this group and I can get a “shot” of inspiration on a regular schedule.
