In the Dark
Last weekend we went to the Harmony Sweepstakes A Capella Festival. It’s a yearly event where vocal groups from around the US perform and compete. They sing beautifully, and in a wide range of styles. They move around a lot too; this makes drawing a challenge!
I did these ink drawings in the dark. I couldn’t see a thing, and even ran right off the paper on that first one. Later after the show I added the watercolor. This is a fun way to draw, and of course there’s no pressure to make it come out perfectly. Drawing people that move is hard though, even when you can’t see the paper!
By the way, I’ve added a few new items to the menu bar on the right including “Link-o-rama” (my links list) and a Sketch Gallery. It seems one can spend an infinite amount of time tweaking their blog code and configuration. I have to remember to leave time for sketching! 🙂

These are brilliant sketches. As somebody who creates highly worked drawings I crave to do something like this. However it’d never turn out like these little masterpieces. I cannot believe they were done in the dark – I could see them on gallery walls. Brilliant.

I really love these, they’ve got such energy. I particularly love soltice and faultline – you’ve got the ‘gesture’ of each person so well.

I love the way you note figures with simple lines. I’m going to have to practice that.

Oh, they are just wonderful. I am always suggesting that my friends draw at performances, thus taking advantage of the free models. I will note that with instrument players, there is the tendency for them to return again and again to the same position, thus enabling you to refine the drawing a bit with each pass. But this does require a bit of light. Meanwhile, you have had some excellent practice with *blind contour* sketches. Thanks so much for sending these along.

These figure drawings are great…you did so well on capturing the suggestion of figure and movement.

I especially like ‘high fidelity’ – the colours work really well and it looks somehow ‘musical’
