SketchCrawl 16: San Francisco
Last Sunday was the 16th SketchCrawl event. My husband and I spent the day in San Francisco sketching and exploring at the Ferry Building. We had a great day!
This historic building has been extensively restored and reopened in 2003 as a food-oriented marketplace. It bustles with energy and activity and the architecture and shops are quite striking. It’s a great place to sketch. There are also awesome Bay views and on Saturdays and Tuesdays, a Farmer’s Market.
We also enjoyed a wonderful lunch outside at MarketBar. The weather was just perfect: a gloriously crisp Fall day.

These are great as always! I love taking these little excursions with you via your blog. The first is my favorite…the blue sky captivated me.
I’m in the planning stage of making a bookblock for a new leatherbound sketchbook I bought in Florence. The bookblock slips out so it can be replaced when full. I don’t care for the one it came with…beautiful paper but not for watercolor. Your instructions for copic binding liberated me from store bought sketchbooks!!!

Nice work, Martha, as usual, tasteful, consistent, with your unique style. My favorite this time around is “Lunch at MarketBar.” An unusual composition: Rather than focusing on the city/building details, you thoughtfully spotlighted the umbrella, perhaps because it held the most meaning for you on the occasion (perhaps because that was where you enjoyed your marvelous lunch).

Hi Peggy:
There is a lot of info on my materials, including colors, here: How I Sketch: Materials.
I don’t use purple out of the tube though: I mix French Ultramarine and Permanent Alizarin Crimson.
Good Luck and Keep Sketching!

My question is what purple do you use?? Or do you mix your own?
I am working making my sketches not look flat!!

Martha,
I love seeing your sketchcrawl pages! The lovely line and beautiful watercolor washes always draw me in. Please don’t forget to let me know if you are ever returning to Manhattan to sketch. I’d love to spend time with you.

Ooops…. I lost the first part of this… Anyway, SketchCrawl looks like it’s lots of fun.
Have a grand day!

Martha, these are excellent. I especially like the Market Bar and the pumpkins. Great job!
