Cafe Sketching
As the weather gets colder I find myself sketching indoors a lot. Last weekend I took my sketchbook to the Espresso Roma Cafe on Hopkins Street in Berkeley and made this sketch. /2008/01/06/cafe-sketching/
The perspective was a little quirky because I was sitting close to the subject and had to turn my head a bit to see the whole thing. It couldn’t be helped, there was a wall right behind me, but I’ll keep that in mind when choosing indoor subjects.
What have you been sketching indoors?

That’s a Very nice sketch!! I was surprised to see the cafe where I used to work! 🙂

I’m SO impressed with your sketches! Gosh, you do a beautiful job. I’m trying…..I now have Barbara’s book on sketching and I signed up for three pen and ink classes here on the island at the Arts Center. That will be next month and I’m really looking forward to it. In the meantime, I’m plodding along….lol I love seeing your work though. You inspire me.

nice stuff!
indoors sketching, well i did my kitchen sink; but i’ve been really trying to get outdoors as much as i can, brave the cold.

This is a very fine sketch Martha – it makes me feel like I’m sitting right next to you sipping a hot drink and watching you sketch!
I love sketching indoors – in fact I’ve now done it so much I’ve renamed them ‘interior landscapes’. This makes them more serious and means I’m allowed to do them in summer as well! 😉

This is fantastic! I love your detail work and color washes. I can almost her the espresso machine and smell the coffee! The way you’ve captured the light on the glass is wonderful.

This is very delicate. I really like how you’ve done the details. I find that when I do a sketch like this, I over-clutter it. Yours looks like I could step behind the counter and start selling bagels.

Cafe sketches are great, aren’t they? I don’t see a perspective problem here! I’ve been sketching indoors, yes, and a bit less than when the weather is more inviting. But I figure these seasonal ups and downs are as they should be.

Nice cafe sketch Martha. I actually like the perspective you’ve captured. And those pastries look good in this cold weather! I’ve been staying indoors as well, fiddling with a wacom tablet….hoping the power stays on (I’ve been fortunate).

A wonderful cafe sketch Martha…I love your suggestion of details, the cups there in the background, the doughnuts/bagels…and the subtle colour gives just the right balance.

This drawing is lovely. I have been speed-sketching in the food hall at the shopping mall this morning. Nothing so delicate and lovely though.

What a neat sketch. Your colors are subtle and never overdone.
I’ve been sketching inside exclusively!

I never mind any perspective issues in a fresh sketch like this. I’ve been on the run too much over the holidays for any cafe sketching. But I’ll take your reminder and do one some time this week. THanks!

Really enjoy this sketch.
As for me it’s been small things but I think I’ll give the cafe a try this week.

sketching at a cafe is a particularly stimulating environment to me and a reminder that one can sketch at the most obvious and familiar places and find a jewel to draw or paint. ..I live in the East so winters provide a very good time to practice indoor creativity. No excuses! I always look forward to your lovely sketches and the feeling and sense of joy that you put into them.. Also I always appreciate the hints that you give ….very helpful.

I used to live right around the corner from there on Ada Street. I miss that wonderful neighborhood. Your sketch made me crave a scone. Yummy sketch!

Beautiful sketch! I love the soft colors and the way the foreground pops.
I’m working on sketching my teapot collection…still have a few more to go. Maybe I’ll be done by spring.

lovely cafe sketch: details of bakery goods are captured so well I want to grab a bite myself.

The cafe looked most inviting.
I mostly sketch my dogs, 3 of them, and sometimes subjects on the television. At night, while sitting in bed reading, I will sketch some Victorian Chairs in the room, my doll and stuffed animal collections, and my perfume bottles.

Very nice sketch. Like the soft color you added. Most of my sketches are done indoors, but not all indoor subjects. Today I did 3 sketches outdoors while sitting on our back porch. Only the orange “tree” is actually in our backyard.
It’s on my Flickr.
