Lunar Eclipse
On Wednesday there was a full lunar eclipse here in the Bay Area. I really wanted to draw it, but cloud cover obscured most of the event. We did catch the end though, at about 9:45pm from our front yard.
I did this little (2 x 3 inches) sketch in about 15 minutes. It was a cold and wet night so I went indoors and started by painting the sky and moon. I let the sky dry with it’s hard edge then painted the shadow, softened that edge. I went back outside and inked the tree. Inside once again I finished up with some additional watercolor on the tree.
One benefit of high quality watercolor paper is that it is easy to create a variety of edges. Hot press (HP) paper, which I favor, tends towards distinct hard edges which is a look I like, especially for quick sketches.

Beautiful, but yet so simple. It reminds me of a Japanese postcard I got a few years ago.

I too love the shadow covering a part of the moon. It is a very atmospheric little sketch, thanks for sharing.

Oh, what a lovely idea….I tried to get photographs of the eclipse and they didn’t come out. It never occurred to me to paint it. It would have had so much more emotion if I had.
By the way, I look forward to your new postings and enjoy them very much…

As I was out looking at the eclipse here in Cleveland…it was freezing cold but a wonderful clear night…I actually thought someone should sketch this!!! Should have been me.. our view was of the moon w/a beautiful orange mottling on it…in a clear navy blue sky… I should sketch if from memory…But I was glad, so glad to see your sketch. I do love it…it is precious!!! Keep inspiring me.. I need it desperately!!

I love the way you did the silhouette of the trees framing the moon and the soft delicate colors. Also the squiggly border. Beautiful!

This is beautiful – I love the tree branches as well as the way you’ve painted the earth’s shadow on the moon.
