At the Symphony
I recently attended the Berkeley Symphony and sketched the musicians during the performance. As I’ve done in the past when sketching in a theater, I did the ink work in the dark and added the watercolor later on.
Initially when the lights came up these sketches looked like a bunch of squiggles. But as I began to paint what I could recognize, more and more hidden shapes – arms, bows, violins – revealed themselves.

Hi , I am so jealous. I was at my daughters and then a friends recitals and was just itching to draw. I thought too dark and all. Plus had kids on my lap but the desire to sketch. These have such great character!!
Bravo! Thanks for sharing.

Each gestural musician is a little gem, and the pages evoke a concert. These little figures are so lively. Just wonderful, Martha

I haven’t been around for a while MArtha…great sketches these, I admire the ease with which you do them and I love your Napa valley sketches too!

These are wonderful, Martha! I wish I could sketch in situations like that, but it never works out for me.
