Continuing on with my recent New York Trip, I had a great day walking through Central Park and visiting one of my (well, everyone’s) favorite museums, the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This summer’s rooftop sculpture exhibit features three Jeff Koons sculptures including this one: Balloon Dog, Yellow. The day was rather chilly, yet with only a cappuccino to sustain me I braved the elements to get my sketch. Suffering for art, you know!

Because of the cold weather I generally did more indoor sketching in New York than planned. Here are a couple of favorite cafes, and a quick sketch of the Lincoln Center.

I also attended the New York City Ballet at the Lincoln Center, a program featuring Jerome Robbins choreography and Leonard Bernstein music. As I often do, I tried to sketch blind, in the dark. Here is a montage of some of the more readable scribbles done during the three dances: Fancy Free, Dybbuk, and West Side Story.

Your sketches are just amazing, Martha! You are really talented. I have truly enjoyed looking through your recent posts, especially enjoying the ones from San Francisco and Napa Valley; places that I visited last November and have fond memories from.

These latest are some of my favorites ever–you really did a beautiful job. I grew up on the outskirts of NY and all of these were hauntingly familiar to me–great job!

Oh Martha your sketches never dissapoint – but the Balloon dog is so Awsome – I knew instantly it was balloon (or created to resemble such) A remarkable feat through WC and you braved what I know can be quite windy and chilly on that roof top!

  8. Casey Says:

Wow – you got so much done! I love them all, but have always been partial to your interiors, and these are as good as always.

  9. Lisa Says:

All wonderfully fun, Martha! If I know you, you poked the dog, now didn’t you?! He is GREAT!
    Miss you, Lisa

  10. Shirley Says:

Love them all Martha and I’m especially thrilled to see the dance scribbles. As you said, painting them would make them recognizable! Are all of these from one of the 3 ballets? Or did you mix them up? If mixed, how did you get all of the images on the same page? I’m so glad that I saw them as scribbles.

  11. martha Says:

The balloon dog is steel with some kind of coating, but even up close it looks like if you could poke it, it would be soft. The guards won’t let you get within poking range though. 🙂

  12. E-J Says:

Ooh Martha, great work all round. Your café sketches are especially impressive, since I know I would find it impossibly tricky to do an on-site sketch in such a public place, let alone to compose it so interestingly!

Is the Balloon Dog made of latex or of something entirely different that gives it a similar appearance?

What are your thoughts?
